III. About the Center
Founded in 2009 upon university approval, the Center traces its origin back to the research team for complex resource‑environment systems established by Professor Wei Yiming at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the 1990s. Targeting global scientific frontiers and major national needs in energy and climate change, the Center conducts scientific research and talent training. It aims to generate new knowledge on the interactions among energy systems, climate systems, carbon‑mitigation systems and socio‑economic systems, support evidence‑based decision‑making for energy transition and climate strategies & policies, and cultivate high‑level interdisciplinary compound talents for national modernization.
The Center hosts three provincial‑ministerial‑level research platforms: the Beijing Lab for System Engineering of Carbon Neutrality, the MOE Joint International Research Laboratory of Carbon Neutrality System and Engineering Management, and the Beijing Key Laboratory of Energy Economics and Environmental Management. Its team constitutes a NSFC Basic Science Center and a NSFC Innovative Research Group. Faculty members include recipients of the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award, National Innovation Pioneer Award and China Youth Science and Technology Award. Over 20 faculty members have been selected for talent programs including the Ten‑Thousand‑Talents Program, Cheung‑Kong Scholars Program, National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars.
The Center has undertaken more than 200 fundamental‑research tasks including National Key R&D Program projects, CAS Strategic Priority Research Program projects, NSFC Major Projects, Key International (Regional) Cooperative Projects and General Key Projects. It has completed over 30 policy‑research assignments commissioned by institutions such as the National Energy Administration, National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the World Bank.
Ranked among the world’s top 10 institutions in energy economics and environmental economics according to RePEc, the Center is the first Chinese university member of the Integrated Assessment Modelling Consortium (IAMC) and an observer organization under the UNFCCC. It has published more than 700 papers in leading journals including Nature family journals, accumulating over 36 000 citations, and has authored more than 30 monographs. It has independently developed a suite of proprietary integrated platforms including the integrated National Energy‑Modeling System (iNEMS), carbon‑asset management platform and carbon‑mitigation pathway simulation platform. Achievements include more than 10 authorized national invention patents, 47 software copyrights and 5 national standards. Its self‑developed C3IAM model is the only Chinese global model cited in the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report.
Center faculty have been appointed as a Coordinating Lead Author (CLA) for Working Group III and the sole Chinese Main Author for the Synthesis Report of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, and as CLA for the IPCC Seventh Assessment Report. Invited by Nobel laureate William Nordhaus, a faculty member serves as the sole Chinese lead for his climate‑modelling project YCCRP and co‑supervises joint students. The research team has received more than ten provincial‑ministerial‑level awards (ranked 1st), the First‑class National Teaching Achievement Award (ranked 1st), and the Second‑class National Excellent Textbook Award (ranked 1st). More than 40 policy briefs have been submitted to the General Offices of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council; some have received instructions from central leaders and been incorporated into national decision‑making, and the Center regularly provides advisory services for national ministries and commissions.
IV. PhD Training Outcomes
Upholding the “Four Orientations”, the Center cultivates high‑level specialized talents and attaches great importance to PhD students’ academic training and career development. Its supervisory team has been honored as an Excellent Postgraduate Supervisor Team of Beijing Municipality. The vast majority of PhD candidates spend more than one year for joint training at prestigious overseas universities and research institutes, including the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, London School of Economics and Political Science, ETH Zürich, Columbia University, UC Berkeley and Duke University. All PhD students participate in international academic conferences such as the IAMC Annual Meeting. Multiple students have been admitted to the IIASA Young Scientists Summer Program (IIASA‑YSSP).
Students have published hundreds of papers in top‑tier journals such as Nature Climate Change and Nature Communications. They have won major awards including the National Gold Award of the “Challenge Cup” National College Students’ Venture Competition, the IIASA Mikhalevich Award, Excellent Chinese Doctoral Dissertations in Economics, Beijing Excellent Doctoral Dissertations, and Excellent Doctoral Dissertations from first‑class national academic societies. Several PhD students have obtained NSFC PhD‑student grants.
PhD alumni hold faculty positions at well‑known universities home and abroad including University College London, Aarhus University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Beijing Normal University, Hunan University, University of Science and Technology Beijing, China University of Geosciences, China University of Mining and Technology, North China Electric Power University and Beijing Institute of Technology. Some take up postdoctoral appointments at institutions such as the Australian National University and Chalmers University of Technology.
Other career destinations include top‑tier national think tanks (Party School of the CPC Central Committee, Development Research Center of the State Council, Chinese Academy of Macroeconomic Research, Chinese Academy of Fiscal Sciences), government ministries and their affiliated public institutions (NDRC, MIIT, Ministry of Finance, SASAC, Ministry of Transport, CAS), and central SOEs (CNPC, Sinopec, CNOOC, State Grid, China Electronics, China Energy Investment Corporation).
PhD alumni are widely active in energy‑ and climate‑related government, academic and industrial circles. Many hold important government posts, are selected for national leading‑talent or national young‑talent programs, are listed as Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers, featured in Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe, or serve as President of the Chinese Economists Society in Europe / UK.
