Recently, Professor Yu Biying from the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) Carbon Neutral Systems Engineering Beijing Laboratory was invited to serve as a Coordinating Lead Author (CLA) for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Seventh Assessment Report (AR7), Working Group III. She will take charge of coordinating and drafting Chapter 2: Past and Current Anthropogenic Emissions and Their Drivers, working with authors from around the world. This marks the second time that a faculty member of the laboratory has been selected as a CLA, following Professor Wei Yiming’s appointment to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) in 2018.
The selection of CLAs for IPCC AR7 was based on global nominations submitted by governments and observer organizations, followed by rigorous evaluation and review by IPCC experts. For AR7 Working Group III, only two Chinese scientists were appointed as CLAs, one of whom is also an alumnus of the laboratory. Serving as a CLA for the IPCC assessment report will significantly enhance China’s international influence and voice in the scientific field of climate change.
The IPCC, established in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is an intergovernmental body that provides authoritative scientific assessments on climate change for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and policymakers worldwide. Since its establishment, the IPCC has published six assessment reports, which have become the most important references in climate change science and exerted profound influence on international climate negotiations. Since the launch of the assessment process, the Chinese government has actively advanced the preparation of the reports, deeply participated in reforming IPCC procedures and mechanisms, and played a constructive role in the IPCC process.
Professor Yu Biying is currently a Distinguished Professor at the Beijing Institute of Technology. Her research focuses on energy and climate policy, with innovative contributions in low-carbon energy system transitions, sectoral carbon management, and global climate governance. She has received numerous honors, including the Young Scholars by the National Science Fund, the Distinguished Young Scholars by the National Science Fund, and the Distinguished Young Scholars by the Beijing Natural Science. She is also a recipient of the 17th China Youth Science and Technology Award. Professor Yu currently serves as Deputy Director of the BIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research, Director of the Joint Int. Research Lab of Carbon Neutrality System & Engineering Management, and as an Associate Editor or Editorial Board Member of journals such as Applied Energy.
