On 6th Aug, 2015, Da-Bo Guan, Chair Professor in Climate Change Economics at School of International Development in University of East Anglia, visited CEEP-BIT. He gave a talk about “Disaster footprint analysis: method and applications” and received a warm welcome. This seminar was hosted by Prof. Hua Liao, the deputy director of CEEP-BIT. Prof. Yi-Ming Wei, the director of CEEP-BIT, Prof. Zhao-Hua Wang, the deputy director of CEEP-BIT, and other teachers along with students attended this seminar.

Prof. Da-Bo Guan is a Chair Professor in Climate Change Economics at School of International Development, University of East Anglia. He specializes in ecological economics, international climate change mitigation policies, climate change adaption modeling, scenario analysis on environmental impacts, water accounting and water resources management, input-output techniques and their applications in both developed and developing countries. This report is presented mainly about disaster footprint analysis and climate change adaption.

In this seminar, at first, Prof. Da-Bo Guan introduced the research he conducted in the field of climate change in terms of China’s embodied carbon emission, its embodied carbon emission flow and the potentials for China to reduce carbon emissions in 2030. And then, he proposed a new focus--- climate change adaption. This report explained the concept of disaster footprint analysis, evaluated the indirect economic loss during the climate disaster using input-output analysis, and took urban pluvial flooding in Beijing on 21th July of 2014 for example to provide more details. Also, by using the example of Hurricane Sandy, a giant storm expected to impact millions of people along the mid-Atlantic and northeast U.S, the report evaluated the social impacts of climate disaster by virtue of big data from Twitter and proposed some political suggestions for disaster prevention and mitigation in terms of climate change adaptation, which inspired teachers and students a lot.

After this seminar, teachers and students from CEEP-BIT had a heated discussion with Prof. Da-Bo Guan. And then, Prof. Da-Bo Guan accepted the letter of appointment as Adjunct Professor of BIT from Zhi-Hong Yang, member of the Party Committee, member of the standing committee and secretary of the Commission for Discipline Inspection of BIT.
