On September 9th, 2016, Dr. Wake Bronwyn Davina (Chief Editor of Nature Climate Change) and Dr. Monica Contestabile (Senior Editor for Nature Research), gave reports entitled “How to get published – Nature Climate Change and other Nature title” and “Introduction to Nature Research” respectively at CEEP-BIT. The reports were hosted by associate professor Bi-Ying Yu, some other teachers and students attended the reports, and had an in-depth discussion of these topics.
Bronwyn is an oceanographer, with a PhD in trace element biogeochemistry and first class Honours in Antarctic Studies from the University of Tasmania, Australia. Her undergraduates studies were competed at the Australian National University, where she received a Bachelor of Science, majoring in chemistry, and a Bachelor of Asian Studies, majoring in Japanese language and Eastern Religions. Prior to joining Nature Climate Change, Bronwyn was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Southampton, UK and European Institute for Marine Studies, Brest, France. Her research work focused on trace metal cycling in marine waters and their roles as micronutrients for phytoplankton.
In Bronwyn’s report, she said that Nature Climate Change launched in April 2011 and is a monthly journal dedicated to publishing the most significant and cutting-edge research on the science and impacts of global climate change and its implications for the economy, policy and the world at large. The journal covers the physical, biological and social and behaviour sciences and strives to synthesize interdisciplinary research. Dr Bronwyn Wake. She joined the journal in 2012 to cover the physical sciences and the marine and aquatic environment. In November 2014, Bronwyn moved to spend 18 months in Australia establishing an editorial presence for the Nature family whilst still working on the journal, before returning to London in May this year as Chief Editor.
Meanwhile, Monica Contestabile is a Senior Editor for Nature Research, where she has covered various roles contributing to the company’s publishing strategy in the space of societally-relevant research. Trained as an economist, Monica has developed wide-ranging interests in climate change, sustainability and closely related areas across the social and natural sciences, and their mutual interfaces. Prior to joining Nature Research, Monica worked with WWF-UK developing research on sustainable consumption and before that she held academic positions in the UK and Mexico. Monica has a PhD in environmental economics from the University of Naples Federico II, Italy.
In her report, she introduced Nature Research, and she said that societal problems are complex and pressing - food, water and energy security in the face of global environmental change; dysfunctional economic systems; growing population and rapid urbanization; global health pressures. We urgently need to understand the drivers of such problems and identify solutions. Nature Research is developing a publishing strategy that goes beyond traditional natural sciences to embrace the social sciences, and tries to synthesize the best interdisciplinary societally-relevant research.
