From December 20 to 21, 2025, the 2nd Beijing‑Hong Kong‑Shanghai Symposium on Energy Transition and Climate Change was successfully held at East China University of Science and Technology. Professor Wei Yiming, Director of the Beijing Lab for System Engineering of Carbon Neutrality, led his team to attend the conference and deliver academic presentations.
Professor Wei Yiming gave the keynote speech entitled Energy Transition for Climate Change Mitigation: Challenges and Countermeasures of Critical Metal and Mineral Resources. He illustrated potential mineral‑resource‑related challenges in global energy‑transition pathways, and put forward solutions from the perspectives of balancing emission‑reduction targets, mineral‑resource security and regional equity.
Faculty members of the laboratory, namely Tang Baojun, Zhao Lutao, Kang Jianing and Chen Weiming, delivered thematic reports on topics including coordinated low‑carbon transition pathways for park‑level power systems, impacts of the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on China’s carbon mitigation, optimization of regional CCUS policies, and supply‑chain risks of metals for global renewable‑energy deployment. In addition, more than ten experts and scholars from East China University of Science and Technology, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Shandong University and Ningbo Oriental Institute of Technology shared their latest research findings.
During the symposium, participating experts conducted in‑depth exchanges and discussions on key engineering‑technical issues and socio‑economic challenges arising from energy transition, and reached consensus on future cross‑regional and interdisciplinary research cooperation.
Initiated and alternately hosted by Beijing Institute of Technology, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and East China University of Science and Technology, the Beijing‑Hong Kong‑Shanghai Symposium on Energy Transition and Climate Change brings together scholars and industry experts from the three regions to discuss energy‑transition pathways and climate‑change response strategies, and promotes interdisciplinary integration as well as cross‑disciplinary academic exchange and collaboration. The inaugural symposium was successfully held at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2023.
