At 15:00 on August 11, 2018, Prof. Jingming Chen, an academician of Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada, was invited to visit CEEP and do an academic report entitled “Diagnosing the Terrestrial Carbon Cycle Control Mechanism with Satellite Remote Sensing Vegetation Parameters”. This report was hosted by Prof. Hua Liao, many teachers and students attended the report.

Professor Jingming Chen is an academician of Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada, a national “Thousand Talents Program”, a chair professor in Cheung Kong Scholars, and a recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Fund. He is a professor at the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto and the director of the International Earth System Institute at Nanjing University. He obtained a bachelor's degree from Nanjing Meteorological College in 1982 and a doctorate from the University of Reading in 1986. He mainly engaged in vegetation remote sensing and global change research. He has published more than 330 papers (SCI), cited over 13,000 times (Web of Science) by peers, with an h-index of 61. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Remote Sensing of Environment, an associate Editor of Journal of Geophyiscal Research-Biogeosciences and Canadian Journal of Remote Sensing, a member of the Editorial Board of Agricultural and Forest Meteorology, a member of the Steering Committee of the US Flux Observing Network, a member of the Expert Group on Global Change Majors of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, and a member of the Overseas Expert Advisory Committee of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council.
In today's report, Professor Jingming Chen introduced the mechanism for applying satellite remote sensing technology to diagnose terrestrial carbon cycle control. He also discussed about the remote sensing inversion method of vegetation aggregation index and leaf area index (LAI). The double-optimized global carbon assimilation system and a method for collaborative optimization of "remote sensing monitoring - model simulation - atmospheric inversion - data assimilation" are introduced, which are established by him and own China's independent intellectual property rights. In addition, he also introduced the characteristics of carbon flux changes in the global terrestrial ecosystem and their main driving factors. After the report, Professor Jingming Chen took the picture with teachers and students at CEEP together.
